Biological efficiency (BE) in mushroom cultivation is the ratio of fresh mushrooms harvested to the dry weight of the substrate used.

Understanding Your Substrate Ratio

Achieving the perfect fruiting block is a delicate balance of carbon, nitrogen, and water. For wood-loving species like Oysters, Lion's Mane, and Shiitake, the standard industry gold-standard is the Master's Mix—a precisely formulated blend consisting of 50% hardwood sawdust or pellets and 50% soy hulls, hydrated to exactly 60%.

While pure hardwood blocks are excellent at mimicking a mushroom's natural environment, supplementing with soy hulls provides a massive boost in nitrogen and essential nutrients. This exact substrate ratio allows mycelium to colonize rapidly and fruit vigorously, dramatically improving your overall biological efficiency.

Why Biological Efficiency Matters in Mycology

Whether you are a commercial farmer trying to maximize yield per square foot or a hobbyist wanting the most out of your grow tent, biological efficiency is the ultimate metric of success. It tells you exactly how effectively your mycelium is converting raw substrate into harvestable, fresh mushrooms.

If your substrate lacks the proper nutrients or is incorrectly hydrated, your BE plummets. By using a calculator to lock in your exact hardwood-to-soy ratios and water weight, you eliminate the guesswork of "field capacity." Proper hydration prevents bacterial contamination from standing water while ensuring the mycelium doesn't dry out before subsequent flushes.

The Math Behind the Calculation

Formulating substrate by weight is significantly more accurate than using volumetric measurements (like cups or buckets). Our calculator computes the exact dry mass and water required based on your target block size.

How to Calculate by Hand

First, figure out your water weight:

Water Weight = Target Block Weight × Hydration Percentage

Next, find your Total Dry Weight by subtracting the water from the total weight. Then, split that dry weight between your ingredients:

  • Hardwood Total Dry Weight × Hardwood Percentage
  • Soy Hulls Total Dry Weight × Soy Hull Percentage
